A House That Remembers:

Some houses are built of wood and stone. Others are built of memory. SVS Arena – The Heritage Manor, standing quietly at Pariyaram near Chalakudy, belongs to the latter. Shaped as a traditional Kerala Nalukettu and restored with care, this century-old manor carries within it the rhythm of generations, the hush of courtyards, and the grace of a life once lived slowly and with purpose.

Constructed in 1921 as the ancestral tharavadu of the respected Kannambilly family, the house was envisioned by Mr. Chakkappan, a man whose life reflected the spirit of his times, rooted in tradition yet open to change. The Nalukettu mirrored this balance: inward-looking, harmonious, and deeply connected to nature, while also standing as a symbol of prosperity and cultural refinement in central Kerala.
Yet the story of the house begins much earlier. Its lineage reaches back to the 18th century, when political turmoil swept across the region during the invasions of Tipu Sultan. It was during this period that Chaku (1785–1850), an early ancestor of the family, journeyed by boat along the Chalakudy River and settled in Pariyaram. From this act of survival grew a legacy of resilience that would shape the family for generations.
Under Mr. Chakkappan’s stewardship, the estate flourished. Fields yielded pepper, betelnut, and paddy, cultivated through age-old agricultural wisdom. His close friendship with Kochi Maharaja Raja Rama Varma XIV, who maintained a summer palace nearby, brought royal presence into the quiet rhythms of the household. The Kannambilly home became a place where conversations crossed boundaries of power, commerce, and culture.
Progress arrived early here not as disruption, but as quiet evolution. The family introduced the region’s first Plymouth car, embraced modern enterprise, and participated in global trade through the historic Cochin State Forest Tramway, which carried timber from Kerala’s forests to distant shores. At the same time, compassion remained central: tenant farmers were housed and supported under the Pattom Varam system, reinforcing the house’s role as both shelter and steward.
As decades passed, the Nalukettu moved gently through generations, each custodian preserving not just a structure, but a way of life. Today, under the vision of SVS Arena, the house has been reborn as a heritage manor- one that does not merely display history, but allows guests to live within it.
Located near Chalakudy, SVS Arena : The Heritage Manor serves as a welcoming base for travellers exploring the region’s natural and cultural attractions. Guests can enjoy visits to the renowned Athirappilly waterfalls, the scenic hill routes of Valparai, and the surrounding riverside landscapes, while returning to the manor’s calm, heritage ambience at the end of the day.
