Post-Tour Reflections: Davao City’s Living Tapestry of Nature, Culture, and Community

Following the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2026, a post-tour to Davao City from 31 January to 4 February offered a deeply immersive introduction to one of the Philippines’ most culturally diverse and environmentally rich destinations. Known as the gateway to Mindanao, Davao is celebrated for its balance of urban development, indigenous heritage, and biodiversity conservation.

Post-Tour Reflections: Davao City’s Living Tapestry of Nature, Culture, and Community

The journey began with a warm and symbolic welcome at Davao International Airport, where delegates were greeted with a traditional tribal dance performance, reflecting the city’s strong respect for its indigenous roots. Davao is home to several ethnolinguistic groups, including the Bagobo, Ata, and Mandaya communities, whose living traditions remain central to the region’s identity.

Day One focused on Davao’s growing reputation as a center for agri-tourism and conservation. At the Malagos Chocolate Museum, the Philippines’ first fully interactive chocolate museum, visitors learned about cacao cultivation, bean-to-bar chocolate making, and the country’s rising profile in fine single-origin chocolate. The hands-on experience culminated in crafting personalized chocolate bars, highlighting how value-added agriculture supports local farmers.

The afternoon visit to the Philippine Eagle Center underscored Davao’s global importance in wildlife conservation. Home to the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, one of the world’s largest and rarest birds of prey, the center plays a vital role in breeding, education, and habitat protection. Delegates encountered Viggo, the eagle featured on the Philippine ₱1000 peso note, symbolizing national pride and conservation awareness. In a gesture of support, ATF formally donated ₱25,000 to the center, with participants receiving conservation certificates.

The day concluded with a formal dinner and networking session with Davao tourism stakeholders, reflecting the city’s collaborative approach to sustainable tourism development.

Day Two offered a profound cultural exchange with the Bagobo-Tagabawa community. At the tribal hall, delegates met Datu Lawrence Saladin Bayocboc, the tribal chieftain, who shared insights into ancestral land stewardship, coffee cultivation, and indigenous livelihoods. Participants toured the community’s coffee plantations and each planted a coffee sapling, symbolizing long-term sustainability and partnership. The visit was marked by traditional snacks prepared by tribal women and an emotional farewell that highlighted the depth of community hospitality.

Later, the group visited Eden Nature Park, a highland eco-destination known for farm-to-table dining and environmental education. Here, delegates prepared a durian-based delicacy, embracing Davao’s identity as the “Durian Capital of the Philippines,” before engaging in adventure activities such as ziplining and sky cycling.

The day concluded with a visit to FrogKaffee, an artisanal café run by entrepreneur Gina Ellorango Ableitinger, showcasing Davao’s emerging specialty coffee scene. A Hawaiian-themed beachfront dinner followed, complete with live music and a fire dance performance.

Day Three shifted focus to Davao’s marine and adventure tourism. Snorkeling excursions revealed vibrant marine life, including giant clams and starfish, followed by rafting and water activities. The evening marked the 25th anniversary of MTS, celebrated with a hosted dinner.

On the final day, the tour explored Davao’s Islamic communities, reflecting the city’s religious diversity, before souvenir shopping in Chinatown, one of the oldest in the Philippines. The journey concluded in Manila with a farewell dinner at the Grand Bar and Lounge, featuring live DJ music and closing remarks by ATF representatives.

This post-tour reinforced Davao’s position as a destination where culture, conservation, community, and creativity coexist—offering not just experiences, but meaningful connections that define the future of responsible tourism in the Philippines.
