Insights from the 6th Bengal Himalayan Carnival by HHTDN.
The Himalayan Hospitality & Tourism Development Network (HHTDN) has been consistently playing a key role in promoting sustainable, community-based tourism across the Himalayan region. One of its flagship initiatives, the Bengal Himalayan Carnival, stands out as a meaningful platform that brings together tour operators, hospitality stakeholders, local communities, and government representatives under one umbrella.
Strengthening Himalayan Tourism
This year marked the 6th edition of the Carnival, which was held from 30 January to 1 February 2026. Spread across scenic locations in the Eastern Himalayas — including Chalsa–Murti, Sittong, and Kafergaon in the Kalimpong region — the event showcased the vibrant culture, natural beauty, and tourism potential of lesser-known destinations.
Rather than being merely a festival, the Bengal Himalayan Carnival is a strategic tourism development program aimed at elevating rural and community tourism across the Himalayan belt. Through curated familiarisation tours, business networking sessions, panel discussions, and cultural showcases, the program enables tour operators to experience destinations at the grassroots and explore new product ideas.

One of the most significant aspects of the Carnival is its focus on rural and responsible tourism. Instead of limiting attention to already popular sites, the event highlighted village tourism, homestays, eco-adventures, local cuisine, and indigenous culture. This approach directly supports local livelihoods while offering travellers authentic and meaningful travel experiences.
For tour operators, the 6th Carnival served as a practical networking and learning opportunity. Participants engaged with local service providers, destination managers, and policymakers, helping them design diversified itineraries and responsible tourism products. Such platforms are particularly valuable in today’s market, where travellers are increasingly seeking sustainable, off-beat, and experience-oriented journeys.
