Hotels in this famous tourism spot have decided to shut from July 1
Hotels in Darjeeling, probably Bengal’s top tourist destination, have decided to down their shutters indefinitely from July 1. Though the West Bengal government has allowed the reopening of hotels and restaurants from June 8, the Darjeeling Hotel Owners’ Association says it is not feasible to operate with only a few tourists arriving due to the pandemic. The decision may affect the livelihood of 10,000 families associated with the industry in the hill station and its outskirts. West Bengal Tourism shakes hands with Tata to boost tourism
West Bengal Tourism has joined hands with the TATA Steel Professional Golf Tour of India (TATA Steel PGTI), the official sanctioning body of professional golf in India, and Tollygunge Club to come up with a new golfing event- the Bengal Open Golf Championship 2019. The idea behind this association is to leverage the golf tournament in promoting the state as top tourism destination. The Pro-Am event will carry a prize purse of Rs 30 lakh. Plantation and tourism development project coming up in Purulia, West Bengal
Mud houses at Purulia The Panchayat and Rural Development department of West Bengal have envisaged extensive plans to implement a plantation and tourism development project at Kumari Kanan in Purulia, under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) scheme and will be backed by West Bengal Comprehensive Area Development Corporation (CADC). West Bengal considers tea tourism to benefit tea gardens
The West Bengal government is considering the prospects of tea tourism in the state. The government has allocated over Rs 1,000 crore for the welfare of tea garden workers in the state since 2011, said the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee, in a Twitter post on International Tea Day, said her government has also been providing 35 kg of rice at Rs 2 per kg to the tea garden workers. “Today is International Tea Day. North Bengal likely to open 89 more trekking routes
With an aim to attract more tourists and promote tourist in the state, the West Bengal Tourism Department has recently sanctioned 89 trekking routes in north Bengal. “Measures will be taken to ensure safety of visitors opting to go for trekking,” said WBTD. Besides Darjeeling, the tourism department has discovered quite a few trekking routes in the Dooars region too. Lodges/small cottages are available along the routes for the trekkers. Tourist lodges in West Bengal to get 3-star status
The West Bengal government is renovating around 25 state-owned tourist lodges to make them three-star properties. It is a significant move from the affordability archetype for tourist accommodation run by the former government to one of ensuring luxury. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 100 crore. “The room tariff will likely to increase when these lodges reopen in three months,” said Atri Bhattacharya, principal secretary in the Department of Tourism. Darjeeling’s toy train to have a special tourist route
Darjeeling’s much-famed toy train will soon be taking tourists to the many tea gardens across the hill stations. It has entered into an agreement with the West Bengal Tourism for offering the new rides. The main objective of this initiative is to offer tourists with an immersive experience of Darjeeling’s tea gardens through toy train tours, in style as that of the Palace on Wheels of the Indian Railways.
