Thailand govt to help debt-ridden Thai Airways remain afloat
A government panel is stepping up to help debt-ridden Thai Airways pass regulatory and contractual hurdles ahead of the national carrier’s planned debt rehabilitation. According to Prapas Kong, director-general of the State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO), a state-appointed committee following up on the airline’s rehabilitation, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, will arrange the help. The troubled airline turned to the government because it has many contracts with trading partners and legal obligations that can only be resolved with the state’s help. THAI Airways no longer a state enterprise, as govt sells stake
The Thailand government has sold a 3.2% stake in national carrier THAI Airways. The government’s stake now stands at 47.86%, ending the airline’s days as a majority-owned state enterprise. A total of 69.2 million shares were sold to Vayupak, a mutual fund run by the Krung Thai Bank. “The Cabinet agreed the government will reduce its holding in THAI Airways to under 50%, ending the airline’s status as a state-enterprise,” Saksayam Chidchob, Thailand’s transport minister said last week. Thai Smile to fly from Kolkata, five times a week
Thai Smile, the regional carrier of Thai Airways, is all set to start operating from Kolkata to Bangkok, five times a week, from March 31, 2019. The aircraft used for the operations on this route is Airbus 320. The starting fare for the flight is Rs. 8993 all included. The direct flight will also place TG-coded flight numbers on this route. The flight from Kolkata would take off at 01:00 hrs and would arrive in Bangkok at 05:30 hrs on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Thai Airways fitted new seatbelt airbags on business class seats on its Dreamliner 787-9 fleet recently. The news was music to the ears of those nervous flyers. But, however, it’s not that good a decision for fat people and parents of young children.
