West Bengal considers tea tourism to benefit tea gardens
The West Bengal government is considering the prospects of tea tourism in the state. The government has allocated over Rs 1,000 crore for the welfare of tea garden workers in the state since 2011, said the state Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Banerjee, in a Twitter post on International Tea Day, said her government has also been providing 35 kg of rice at Rs 2 per kg to the tea garden workers. “Today is International Tea Day. Goodricke Group is planning for ‘Tea Tourism’
Goodricke Group Ltd is coming up with an innovative idea of ‘Tea Tourism’, by making one of its tea estates to a tourism hot spot. “Thurbo Tea Estate of Mirik in Darjeeling district will be the tourism spot,” said Atul Asthana, Managing Director, GGL. An unused bungalow in the estate, which is built in 1872 will be refurbished for the purpose. Thurbo estate is located near Nepal and is surrounded by orange and orchid farms.
