Jallikattu turns the spotlight on Madurai
Bulls aggressively stormed into the arena at Avaniyapuram here on Friday, signalling the commencement of the Jallikattu competitions during the Pongal (harvest) festival in the district. As the bulls rushed from the ‘vaadivasal’ (entry point), a number of youth swarmed around them hoping to clasp their arms around the animal’s hump and ride to victory in the bull-taming competition. Celebrations on the eve of new year is banned on beaches across Tamil Nadu, a top police official of the State on Wednesday. People are advised against congregating in public places and those driving vehicles after consuming alcohol would be arrested, said the Director General of Police C Sylendra Babu. Kodaikanal’s parks close again due to overcrowding
With the easing of lockdown restrictions, the flow of tourists to Kodaikanal, a major tourist destination in Tamil Nadu. Meanwhile, authorities re-imposed restrictions due to congestion. Spiritual tourism is bringing lakhs of people to this southern state, with statistics indicating that districts with popular temples have emerged as top draws. Ooty all set to go plastic-free from August 15th
One of the most sought-after tourist destinations in India, Ooty in Tamil Nadu is going to be plastic-free from August 2019 onwards. The Nilgiri District Administration, is in charge of Ooty, has passed a rule to ban the sale of single-use plastics that include water bottles, food items packed in plastic, and soft drinks in the town and the highways leading to the district’s major towns. The skies of the Sakthi Mills Ground in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu were filled by the hot air balloons, as part of the Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival. The three-day event, which kick-started on January 12, featured 10 hot air balloons from eight countries. Apart from taking a ride in the balloons, visitors also participated in games organized at the venue. The Nilgiri Mountains, one of the popular tourist destinations in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, witnessed drop in number of visitors in 2018. Two-month trekking ban every year in Tamil Nadu
The state government of Tamil Nadu has banned trekking between February 15 and April 15 every year in the aftermath of the Kurangini forest fire, which killed almost twenty tourists earlier in March this year. The rules have been notified based on an expert committee report on the Kurangini fire. According to ‘Spatial and temporal analysis of decadal forest fire data (2006-2015)’ released by the Tamil Nadu Forest department, forest fires start in January, increase in February and reach its highest point during March. Travellers in any of the areas of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry, please stay safe as the authorities have issued a cyclone alert in the regions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone red alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. Cyclone Titli had earlier made landfall on October 11 and left 62 people dead in Odisha. The IMD said the cyclone Gaja was approaching coastal Tamil Nadu (east-northeast of Chennai) and east-southeast of Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.
