Taiwanese island group sees uptick in tourism
Penghu, the archipelago to the west of Taiwan’s main island, received more visitors in July than during the six previous months combined. As the impact of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) in Taiwan lessens while overseas travel remains difficult, more Taiwanese are traveling around the country, often heading for small islands such as Green Island and Orchid Island in the south-eastern county of Taitung. Holidaymakers are also headed in the other direction, traveling by ship or plane to Penghu County, in the middle of the Taiwan Strait, Channel News Asia (CNA) has reported. Taiwan flags off domestic cruise ship tourism
A cruise ship carrying 1,200 passengers set sail from Keelung Port on Sunday, on the first commercial sea tour since Taiwan imposed travel restrictions due to the COVID-19, the Maritime and Port Bureau said. The “Explorer Dream,” however, will visit only domestic ports, namely the islands of Penghu and Matsu, according to the operator, says a report by Focus Taiwan. With 1,200 tourists on board, the cruise liner will stop at Penghu and Matsu, before returning to Keelung in northern Taiwan on July 29, the operating company Dream Cruises said. Taiwan offers “pretend to go abroad” airport tours
With planes grounded and most tourism on hold during the coronavirus pandemic, one Taiwanese airport has come up with a unique solution to help citizens get their travel fix. Taipei’s Songshan airport will give 90 people the chance to take a tour of their airport and relive the experience of going through immigration, boarding a plane and then disembarking and returning home, CNN has reported. “Can’t leave (Taiwan), then pretend to go abroad at Songshan,” a flier posted to the airport’s website read. With an aim to tap the tourism market in the Middle East, Taiwan Tourism Board has partnered with Musafir.com, the UAE’s first premium-experience travel website. The partnership is aimed to raise awareness about Taiwan as a compelling leisure destination in the Middle East.
