In the wake of the continuous political unrests, sexual attacks and violence against foreigners across the nation, Sri Lanka beefs up its security and established new police posts and patrols at popular resorts. The Sri Lankan government has allocated Rs 30 million to establish the police posts. With an aim to protect the visiting tourists, the police department has set up 20 new stations at holiday hotspots. “I wish we had more men and resources for this job, but we are making adjustments to our deployments to ensure better productivity,” said Police chief Pujith Jayasundara. It was a happy news for the tourism industry, as the foreign tourist arrival exceeds to over 13.4 per cent more than that of the previous year statistics. Foreign tourist arrival for the period of January-March 2018 was 31.27 lakh, while January-March 2017 recorded only 28.45 lakh arrivals. Photo Courtesy: scmp Sri Lanka said it has received 707,924 tourists in the first three months of this year, recording an increase of 17.1 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. “Lanka could have attracted more tourists in March if not for the outbreak of communal violence in Galle and the subsequent declaration of the state of Emergency,” said Tourism Development Minister John Amaratunga referring to the emergency declared in the island country last month following a communal violence between muslims and Buddhist groups. The government of Sri Lanka has issued a ban on popular social media platforms, as a precaution to stop the dissemination of information regarding the ongoing religious violence. According to the official reports, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Viber are blocked. The communal riot between Muslims and Buddhist began on Monday, followed by a 10-day emergency declared by the government. A day after violent clashes between the Muslims and Buddhists in the popular destination of Kandy, the Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency in the region. “The curfew was imposed to control the situation in the area and Police officers are placed on heightened alert in Kandy to ensure the “situation does not spiral into inter-communal conflagration”, the government said in a statement.   Religious and ethnic violence can be at its heights in Sri Lanka, where Muslims account for 10 per cent of the population and Buddhists Sinhalese make up nearly 75 per cent.
