Sri Lanka has launched a luxury train service connecting the country’s Tamil-dominated Jaffna district to the capital city Colombo with the help of a Line of Credit offered by India, in another significant landmark in bilateral ties. More countries are opening borders for Indian tourists who have taken two doses of the covid vaccine. Sri Lanka is one of the last countries on this list. Another feature is that Sri Lanka approves both covishield and covaxin vaccines. Most countries are only accepting the Covishield. Sri Lanka bans travelers from India. The Director General of Sri Lanka Civil Aviation has said that passengers from India will not be allowed to land in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is currently experiencing an increase in covid-19 cases. About 2,000 new cases have been reported in the last five days. From early to mid-April, an average of 200 cases were reported here. Health officials said the current wave was from the fastest spreading UK variant. Vistara has announced a six-time-a-week (except Wednesdays) direct service to Colombo, Sri Lanka from Mumbai starting November 25, 2019, onwards, making it the fourth international destination in network. Sri Lankan Tourism Minister John A Amaratunga has expressed interest to join hands with Kerala to promote tourism in a mutually beneficial manner. SriLankan Airlines will enhance connectivity to India with new flights to Ahmedabad and Calicut. The operations will begin in 2020. The airlines has started operating 4 additional weekly flights connecting Delhi with Colombo from July 4 taking the weekly flights between the two cities to 18 flights.
