Sri Lanka imposes curfew in Kandy for 10 days
A day after violent clashes between the Muslims and Buddhists in the popular destination of Kandy, the Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency in the region. “The curfew was imposed to control the situation in the area and Police officers are placed on heightened alert in Kandy to ensure the “situation does not spiral into inter-communal conflagration”, the government said in a statement. Sri Lanka re-imposes liquor ban on women

For much to the delight of the travel community, the government has recently lifted the ban only to re-impose it in a couple of days’ time. Photo Courtesy: thejournal കൊളംബോ : ശ്രീലങ്കയില്‍ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മദ്യം വാങ്ങാനും വില്‍ക്കാനും അനുവദിച്ച ഉത്തരവ് പിന്‍വലിച്ചു. ടൂറിസം മന്ത്രാലയത്തിന്‍റെ അഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥനയെ തുടര്‍ന്നാണ്‌ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം എക്സൈസ് നിയമത്തില്‍ ഭേദഗതി വരുത്തി ധനമന്ത്രാലയം ഉത്തരവ് പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചത്. മദ്യശാലകളുടെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തന സമയ പരിധി കൂട്ടണമെന്നും വിനോദസഞ്ചാരികളായ സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മദ്യം വാങ്ങാന്‍ അനുമതി നല്‍കണമെന്നും ശ്രീലങ്കന്‍ ടൂറിസം മന്ത്രാലയം ഏറെനാളായി ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു വരികയായിരുന്നു. ഇത് അംഗീകരിച്ചാണ് കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ലങ്കന്‍ ധനമന്ത്രി മംഗള സമരവീര ഉത്തരവ് പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ചത്. ഉത്തരവിനെതിരെ പലരും രംഗത്തെത്തിയതോടെയാണ് ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ മറുകണ്ടം ചാടല്‍. ശ്രീലങ്കയുടെ ബുദ്ധമത പാരമ്പര്യത്തിന് നിരക്കുന്നതല്ല മദ്യം പ്രോത്സാഹിപ്പിക്കാനുള്ള സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ നയമെന്ന് പ്രതിപക്ഷം ആരോപിച്ചു. ഫെബ്രുവരി പത്തിന് നടക്കാനിരിക്കുന്ന തദ്ദേശ ഭരണ തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ പ്രതിപക്ഷം ഇത് മുഖ്യ ആയുധമാക്കുമെന്നും സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ കണക്കു കൂട്ടി. തുടര്‍ന്ന് പ്രസിഡന്റ് മൈത്രിപാല സിരിസേനയുടെ നിര്‍ദ്ദേശാനുസരണം ധനമന്ത്രി നേരത്തെ പുറപ്പെടുവിച്ച ഇളവ് ഉത്തരവ് പിന്‍വലിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. സ്ത്രീകള്‍ക്ക് മദ്യം വില്‍ക്കാനും വാങ്ങാനും വിലക്ക് ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയ സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ...
