The Kerala Travel Mart 2018 has kick-started in Kochi at the Grand Hyatt Kochi Bolghatty on September 27, with the Chief Minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan officially inaugurating the event by lighting the traditional lamp. More than 1600 buyers from India and abroad are in Kochi to participate in the Kerala Travel Mart. The buyers group includes representatives and heads of tourism projects and heads of tourism from the country and outside. The concept of differently-abled friendly tourism will be materialized through the new project – Barrier Free Kerala Tourism, which kick started on 27th June 2017. The Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) is planning to launch an exclusive initiative to collate data on skilled artisans, dancers and other artists by the end of June, under the Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission project. The project is aimed at promoting experimental tourism. The online directory will have details regarding artists, including their name, coordinators, bio-data and details of stage performances. The initiative is expected to help people from across the globe to access the state’s traditional art forms, handicraft products and artisans. In a way to promote sustainable tourism that helps the local communities, seven travel companies with similar interests have associated to form Japan Alliance of Responsible Travel Agencies (JARTA). The initiative will be launched in Kyoto on June 28th. The purpose of JARTA is to design tours and sell destinations that belong to Japan’s traditional ‘Golden Route’, simultaneously aiding the local areas and the people in a great way. Followed by the successful implementation of Responsible Tourism in some of the destinations in the state, the RT Mission is all set to develop eight more RT model villages across Kerala. Also, the People’s Participation for Participatory Planning and Empowerment through Responsible Tourism (PEPPER), an innovative integrated tourism project of the RT Mission that ensures whole-hearted participation of the people in the particular locality, will be extended to 10 more centres. At present RT is implemented in Kovalam, Kumarakom, Thekkady, Vythiri, Ambalavayal, Bakel and Kumbalangi.
