Racy start to Kerala’s CBL boat league, Tropical Titans wins in first leg
Pallathuruthi Boat Club, Alappuzha won the 67th Nehru Trophy Boat Race and topped the first round of the Champions Boat League (CBL) here today, as the pioneering three-month sporting event got off to a racy start in the sprawling Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha. Today’s winner, whose CBL name is Tropical Titans, earned nine points, clocking 4.25.83 minutes to cover the distance of 1,050 metres. Tropical Titans were followed by Coast Dominators (United Boat Club, Kainakary: 4.28.40) and Raging Rowers (Police Boat Club) 4.29.84, securing eight and seven points, respectively. With cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar as the star guest, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will flag off Champions Boat League (CBL) on Saturday alongside the famed Nehru Trophy Boat Race at the Punnamada lake in this coastal city. Hosted by Kerala Tourism, CBL is the country’s first-ever boat-race formatted on the lines of IPL cricket. The tourism department of Kerala has decided to conduct the 67th edition of the Nehru Trophy boat race and the first heats of the Champions Boat League, at Punnamada lake in Alappuzha on August 31, 2019. The NTB and CBL, which were first scheduled on August 10 was postponed considering the risk from the heavy rain and flood. Payippadan has become the fastest snake boat (Chundan vallam) and winner in the 66th edition of the Nehru Trophy Boat Race (NTBR), which has taken place at Punnamada lake in Alappuzha today, 10th November 2018. As torrential rain lashes Kerala, the tourism department has decided to postpone the Nehru Trophy boat race, which was scheduled on Saturday (Aug 11) at Punnamada lake in Alappuzha. The tourism department has made the announcement considering the risk from the heavy rain and flood. Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was invited as the chief guest of the event. The Kerala state Tourism department has announced Rs 25 lakh cash prize for the winners of Champions Boat League tournament. “The boat races in the state will be promoted as a major attraction for International tourists visiting the state,” said Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism. Vembanad lake in Alappuzha, famed for its ornately carved traditional houseboats, is the centerpiece of Kerala’s tourist trade. Pollution is turning the largest wetland ecosystem in south India, Vembanad lake in Alappuzha into a weed-clogged swamp, hampering the recovery of tourism in the region. Cleaning up the lake is vital to tourism and referring to this the Kerala state Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran said the Responsible Tourism Mission will lead the cleaning up activities of the lake. “The RT Mission will initiate various measures, including a ban on plastic in houseboats, their classifications and various other cleaning activities to rectify the situation,” ...
