Atham flag hoisted to mark start of Onam celebrations in Kerala
Low-key celebrations began in Kerala’s Tripunithura town on Thursday adhering to the COVID-19 protocols marking the start of the 10-day “Onam” festivities. Tripunithura MLA K Babu hoisted the Atham flag on the “Atham” day in Tripunithura but there was no Athachamayam procession — the cultural carnival which used to provide one the rare opportunity to watch almost all the folk art forms of Kerala. Onam fete 2019 to conclude with cultural pageantry on Sept. 16
A colourful cultural pageantry will be taken out in the city on September 16, to mark the finale of Onam Celebrations that showcased the best of Kerala’s art and performing traditions in multiple venues for a week. Hon’ble Governor Arif Mohammad Khan will flag off the procession, organized by the Kerala Tourism Department, at Manveeyam Veedhi, near the Raj Bhavan at 5pm. Hon. Kerala to host State Tourism Ministers’ Conclave on Sept 16
Kerala Tourism’s week-long cultural extravaganza to mark this year’s Onam celebrations will kick off on September 10, showcasing the state’s vibrant classical and folk dances, modern art and performing traditions at multiple venues in the state capital and various District Centres. As part of the Onam celebrations, the capital city will also host the State Tourism Ministers’ Conclave, to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on September 16, the concluding day of the festival. Kerala Tourism to organise Athapookkalam and Thiruvathirakali competitions
Photo Courtesy: La Paz Group As part of the upcoming Onam celebrations, Kerala Tourism will organise Athapookkalam competition, which allows the participants to create captivating designs through a mix of colours and flowers, on September 10. It will also organise Thiruvathirakali competition, a unique dance performed by women, on the auspicious day of Thiruvathira, on September 14. The winners of both the competitions will receive an amount of Rs 20,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 as first, second and third prizes, respectively. Kerala Tourism offers ‘experience Onam’ packages to visitors from Sept 1 to 30
Kerala Tourism has unveiled a unique product to literally extend the feel and taste of Onam festival to visitors by enabling them to enjoy a variety of traditional dishes including the famed multi-dish ‘sadya’ and trips to sylvan rural stretches. The project , worked out by the State Responsible Tourism (RT) Mission, will facilitate tourists to stay at village homes as guests, join the celebrations of the festival of flowers, partake home-made delicacies and meals and receive attractive gifts before bidding farewell. Kerala to have a colourless ‘Onam’ this year
This year, Malyalees around the world to have a colourless Onam festival, following the devastating floods that took around 400 lives. Over a million people are still in relief camps and at least 50,000 houses fully or partially damaged by the floods.
