Mexico tourism gets into web of hilarious mis-translations
It has been a bad week for Mexican tourism promotion, and it got worse Friday when the English language version of the country’s tourism website appeared with hilarious mis-translations. Entire states like Hidalgo and Guerrero apparently got machine-translated as Noble and Warrior. Worse for the VisitMexico.com site, there was systematic and inexplicable re-invention of the names of some fairly well-known tourist towns. The Caribbean resort of Tulum somehow became Jumpsuit. Almost half of Mexican Caribbean hotels reopen, as flights resume
The Mexican Caribbean has begun to gradually reopen itself to tourists from June 8, and is on track to have 75% of hotel rooms ready by July 1, according to the Travel Market Report. The region currently has about 45% of inventory reopened, according to a Quintana Roo Tourism Board virtual conference last week. The Quintana Roo Tourism Board handles the marketing for 12 destinations under the umbrella of the Mexican Caribbean and the Grand Costa Maya, including Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Isla Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, and Costa Mujeres. Cancun to open for tourism from June 8
The Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo is preparing to reopen itself to tourism from June 8, Governor Carlos Joaquin Gonzalez has announced. Mexico to launch new tourism campaign to woo Chinese travellers
The government of Mexico is planning to launch its latest tourism campaign, called “Knocking at the Door,” to attract more Chinese tourists. The idea is to target countries with large tourism markets, such as China, and improve Mexico’s standing among global tourist destinations, Tourism Minister Miguel Torruco said in a press release. “There are 15 countries that outrank us in terms of generating foreign revenue (from tourism), whose governments and private sectors have been more creative in boosting their product so it impacts consumers,” said Torruco. “Mexico aims to attract more of China’s 124 million travelers this year, including 22 million ... Major hoteliers operating in Mexico is planning to open around 350 new properties in the country by the year 2022, to exploit the favourite condition prevailing in the tourism sector. City Express Hotels, which mainly targets business travelers, will lead the way by opening 80 new properties over the next three years.
