Meghalaya to identify new tourist destinations to strengthen the economy

Crystal clear water of Wah Umngot river at Dawki Meghalaya government is to rely more on tourism as the major revenue earner of the state, especially after the ban on coal mining by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The authorities are seeking possibilities of identifying new tourism spots in the state, in order to expand the scope of tourism further. Meanwhile, tourist footfalls in the state have been showing an increasing trend during the last decade. Meghalaya Tourism Minister grants Rs 20 Lakhs for Wangala Festival

Metbah Lyngdoh, Tourism Minister, Meghalaya Metbah Lyngdoh, The Meghalaya Minister for Tourism, was the chief guest in the Rugala Ceremony of the Hundred Drums Wangala Festival held on Friday, 9th November 2018 at Asanggre near Tura. Speaking on the occasion, Metbah Lyngdoh said he was so happy  to witness the Wangala festival which he could not attend so far due to various reasons. Meghalaya optimistic of Union Ministry’s tourism promotion schemes

As per the Union Ministry’s tourism development programms – ‘Swedesh Darshan’ and ‘PRASAD’, the Meghalaya State Tourism Department has submitted new proposals to the Center to be considered for approval. Under the Swedesh Darshan Scheme, 13 thematic circuits have been identified for development. The circuits are Northeast India circuit, Buddhist, Himalayan, Coastal, Krishna, Desert, Tribal, Eco, Wildlife, Rural, Spiritual, Ramayana and Heritage circuits. The ‘PRASAD’ scheme (National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive), focuses on development and beautification of the identified pilgrimage destinations.
