India grows as hub for medical tourism, foreign visitors increase 111% in 3 years
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the growth of medical tourism in India is optimistic. The segment has witnessed exponential growth of 111 per cent in the last three years from 2015 to 2017. The Ministry stated that some 4.95 lakh foreign tourists visited India for medical purposes in 2017, a rise from 2.33 lakh in 2015, while in 2016, a total of 4.27 lakh foreign tourists visited the sub-continent. Medical tourism in India by international travellers is expected to grow to USD13.3 billion by 2022, according to a report jointly published by KPMG India and Google. PM unveils state-of-the-art super specialty hospital in Ahmedabad
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the super-specialty public hospital – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Institute of Medical Sciences and Research- in Ahmedabad on 17th January 2018. Built by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, the 78 meter high, 1500 bed hospital is equipped with all modern amenities, including an air ambulance. PM inspected the facilities at the hospital. Mahindra Lifespaces to develop medical tourism hub in Murud
Murud, Maharashtra Maharashtra state government has inked an agreement with realty firm Mahindra Lifespaces to develop the coastal town of Murud in Raigad district as a medical tourism and wellness destination. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 500 crore and it is expected to generate around 6,000 job opportunities. Afghan medical tourists divert from Pakistan to India
Pakistan’s medical tourism sector has been losing clients from Afghanistan, as they are moving to India for treatment. It was acknowledged by the Ministry of Commerce in a written reply to a question from minority lawmaker Mahesh Kumar Malani regarding reasons for the decline in exports to Afghanistan over the past four years. The reason for the shift is reported to be due to the border management policy of Pakistan, increasing difficulties faced by Afghanis in getting Pakistani visa, compulsory police reports and security clearances and unnecessary security checks at border crossing point. Maharashtra to launch web portal for medical tourism
Maharashtra tourism department plans to launch a web portal to provide a single source of authentic information about medical care and to eliminate hawkers and middlemen. “Maharashtra is trying to enhance its strength in the medical and wellness industry, which includes therapies like yoga, Ayurveda and meditation. The portal will include all the stakeholders in the industry like, doctors, practitioners, hospitals, spas, transport and travel agencies, service providers, bureaus providing bedside assistants for patients and even security services,” said a senior official from the state tourism department. Swiss National Park Swiss Tourism board is looking at the strong potential in medical tourism, and is eying UAE as a source market for medical tourism to Switzerland. “At the moment, it’s (medical tourism) less than 10 per cent of total visits to Switzerland. That’s why we see so much potential and opportunity to grow.
