 “The central ministry is considering receiving the foreign tourists coming to our country by assigning government representatives,” said union minister of state for tourism Alphons Kannanthanam. He was talking to the media after the road show in various American States to showcase Indian Tourism industry under the brand name ‘Incredible India’.

According to a senior home ministry official, the government has received Rs 1,400 crore as revenue from the e-visa scheme. Since its inception of e-visa in 2014, the tourists from 163 countries are benefited from the scheme. The e-visa has been instrumental in boosting the tourism sector of India. It is evident from the fact that 19 lakh tourists used the e-visa facility to visit India last year. The government expects that the tourist arrivals will be more than 25 lakh this year. The tourism ministry plans to accelerate India’s booming tourism sector by the introduction of long-term visas, which will increase the international tourist inflow significantly. The international tourist arrivals to India increased by 15.7 per cent in 2017 to top 10 million. The ministry also plans to ease travel restrictions in some areas, introduce more flights to trendy tourist destinations for boosting the international tourist arrivals. The tourism ministry had already proposed for better air connectivity to places like Khajuraho, Aurangabad, Ahmedabad, Srinagar and Guwahati to the civil aviation ministry last week. Relief for the Bangladesh tourists, as from May 20th they can walk-in and submit their applications at the Indian Visa Application Centers (IVACs) in Sylhet, Mymensingh and Barishal without prior appointment. The new move is to further relax, streamline and ease access for Bangladesh nationals to Indian visas as part of ongoing plans of Indian High Commission. The applications will be accepted at the centres from 8am-12pm. “These measures are aimed at easing access to the Indian visa and strengthening people-to-people contacts between India and Bangladesh,” the High Commission said. Visitors can apply and pay online to get an electronic travel authorisation (ETA) within 72 hours. These e-visa will be valid for 30 days and a tourist can avail this facility twice a year.
