Cochin Port’s new cruise terminal will come up at the Ernakulam Wharf by February 2020. The cruise terminal, to be built at a cost of Rs 25.72 crore, will have the facilities to handle 5,000 tourists. The 2,253-sq metre terminal will feature passenger and crew lounges, immigration counters, tourist information counter and duty free shopping. The estimated cost of construction of the terminal is Rs 25.72 crore and of this Rs 21.41 crore had been sanctioned as grant by the Union Tourism Ministry, said a release. Nithin Gadkari, Minister for Road Transport, Highways, Shipping and Water Resources, said  that discussion are on with Singapore to develop cruise tourism at various locations in India. “We are keen on promoting cruise tourism on a mega-scale in the country. Mumbai Marine Drive area will soon become one of the world’s top water sports destinations to have  events like Formula 1 racing and Grand Prix. The government is planning to develop Mumabi as the hub of cruise tourism in the country. In a move to promote cruise tourism substantially, the Union Government has planned to develop terminals at major ports. The government plans to make a single company in charge of executing the contracts of maintenance and operations of cruise terminals. The cruise terminals at 4-5 ports will be maintained and operated by one company. The contracts will be implemented by the Ministry of Shipping after discussing with the major port authorities and state naval boards. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to visit Jakarta and talks are already on to develop a cruise tourism circuit between Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Indonesia as part of steps to bolster bilateral ties.
