Privatisation of the maintenance of airport terminals was a plan initiated by the previous UPA government, which has faced a roadblock as the employee unions started protesting against the move. The current plan is to privatise at least eight government-owned airports — Chennai, Kolkata, Kochi, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati. പുതിയ ടെര്‍മിനല്‍ നിര്‍മിക്കുന്നതുള്‍പ്പെടെയുള്ള പദ്ധതികള്‍ക്കു കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ അനുമതി നല്‍കിയതോടെ ചെന്നൈ വിമാനത്താവളത്തിന്റെ മുഖച്ഛായ മാറും. നിലവില്‍ രാജ്യത്തെ തിരക്കേറിയ നാലാമത്തെ വിമാനത്താവളമായ ചെന്നൈ, വികസന പ്രവര്‍ത്തനങ്ങള്‍ പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകുന്നതോടെ ഒന്നാം നിരയിലേക്കു കയറും. പുതിയ ടെര്‍മിനല്‍ നിര്‍മാണത്തിനും മറ്റുമായി 2467 കോടി രൂപയാണ് സാമ്പത്തിക കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ക്കായുള്ള മന്ത്രിസഭാ സമിതി ഇന്നലെ അനുവദിച്ചത്. വ്യോമയാന ഗതാഗത മേഖലയുടെ വളര്‍ച്ച കണക്കിലെടുത്താണ് രാജ്യത്തെ മൂന്നു വിമാനത്താവളങ്ങളില്‍ വിപുലമായ സൗകര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഏര്‍പ്പെടുത്താന്‍ കേന്ദ്രം തീരുമാനിച്ചത്. ദക്ഷിണേന്ത്യയില്‍നിന്നു ചെന്നൈയും ഉത്തരേന്ത്യയില്‍ നിന്നു ലക്‌നൗവും വടക്കുകിഴക്കന്‍ മേഖലയില്‍ നിന്നു ഗുവാഹത്തിയുമാണു പട്ടികയില്‍ ഇടം നേടിയത്. നിലവിലെ സൗകര്യം, യാത്രക്കാരുടെ എണ്ണം, സ്ഥലത്തിന്റെ പ്രാധാന്യം, കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളിലെ വളര്‍ച്ചാനിരക്ക് എന്നിവയാണ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പിനു പരിഗണിച്ചത്. പുതിയ ടെര്‍മിനല്‍ കൂടി വരുന്നതോടെ ചെന്നൈ വിമാനത്താവള ടെര്‍മിനലിന്റെ ആകെ വിസ്തീര്‍ണം 3,36,000 ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്ററായി മാറും. നിലവില്‍ ഇത് 1,97,000 ചതുരശ്ര മീറ്ററാണ്. മൂന്നു ടെര്‍മിനലുകളാണിപ്പോള്‍ ചെന്നൈ വിമാനത്താവളത്തിനുള്ളത്. പഴയ ആഭ്യന്തര ടെര്‍മിനലിലാണ് (ടി ... The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given its approval to for expansion and upgradation of integrated terminals at Chennai, Guwahati & Lucknow Airports, at a cost of Rs 2467 crore, Rs 1383 crore and Rs 1232 crore, respectively. Construction of New Integrated Terminal at Lucknow airport will have an area of 88,000 sqm along with the existing terminal building with 16292 sqm. If you are anyways planning to drive down to Chennai airport today or tomorrow  anytime between 2 and 5 pm, you will have to follow a new traffic route to reach the domestic and international terminals. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is carrying out a trial run to open the central arm of a vehicular bridge on the airport premises. Commuting from the international and domestic terminals to the Metro station in Chennai has always been a difficult task for the people. Bringing huge relief to air passengers, the Airport Authority of India has set up 602-metre-long walkalators at the airport. The passengers will  have self-check-in counters at the airport Metro station from April 14 onwards.
