Inspired by Akshay Kumar’s movie Padman, Chandigarh based teenagers Jaanvi Singh and Laavanya Jain have started a hygiene campaign ‘spot free’. They visit the nearby slums to create awareness of personal hygiene and bought sanitary napkins and distribute among the women. North Bengal likely to open 89 more trekking routes

With an aim to attract more tourists and promote tourist in the state, the West Bengal Tourism Department has recently sanctioned 89 trekking routes in north Bengal. “Measures will be taken to ensure safety of visitors opting to go for trekking,” said WBTD. Besides Darjeeling, the tourism department has discovered quite a few trekking routes in the Dooars region too. Lodges/small cottages are available along the routes for the trekkers. The tourism department is expecting that opening routes in Darjeeling and Dooars region will help in creating employment opportunities in regions that are socio-economically backward. Second Sphinx said to be found in Egypt

Some recent news says, construction workers has found a statue of ‘lion’s body with a human head’, underneath, while they were working on a road at Al Kabbash. New 4 – lane bridge on Kosi river at Phulaut

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the project for construction of 6.930 km long 4-lane bridge at Phulaut in Bihar. There is a 10 km long missing link between Phulaut and Bihpur on NH-106 and falling in the catchment area of Kosi River. As such, presently, the traffic from Phulaut to Bihpur requires to take a detour of approximate 72 km. India extends e-visa facility for citizens of 165 countries

As part the efforts to bring more tourists to the country, the government has extended e-visa facility for citizens of 165 countries. The e-visa facility is available at 25 airports and five seaports. It was informed by K J Alphons, Tourism minister, in the Lok Sabha. “Government has launched the ‘Incredible India 2.0’ campaign, indicating a shift from generic promotions to market-specific promotional plans. A 24X7 toll free multi-lingual tourist helpline has also been put in place as part of the efforts” added Alphons. India’s five major ports are ready for cruise tourism

Pon Radhakrishnan, Minister of state for shipping and finance stated that five major ports have developed to facilitate cruise tourism. “Chennai  in Tamilnadu, Mormugao in Goa, New Mangalore in Karnataka, Cochin in Kerala and Mumbai in Maharashtra are developed with dedicated cruise terminals and other related infrastructure for docking of cruise vessels and embarking and disembarking of cruise passengers,” said the minister while replying to a question in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Supreme Court asks to seal 11 resorts on Nilgiris elephant corridor

The Supreme Court has directed the Tamil Nadu government to seal or close down 11 resorts and hotels constructed on the elephant corridor of Nilgiris in violation of law within 48 hours . A Bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur directed the owners of the other resorts and hotels located in the area to produce their documents of approval before the Collector within 24 hours. Tourists trapped in Munnar’s Plum Judy Resort rescued

All the tourists including 30 foreign tourists who were trapped following a landslide in the Plum Judy Resort in Munnar are safe, informed Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran. The minister has also urged the authorities to shift the tourists from Idukki to a safer place. The minister gave instructions to the resort owners and also spoke to the foreigners who were trapped inside and assured all the possible help from the government. India frames new draft eco-tourism policy

In order to have clear interpretations of the rules and regulations to follow in eco-tourism, the government is formulating a new policy to provide guidelines and norms for tourism in protected areas such as national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, conservation reserves and even territorial and revenue forests. A draft policy is framed by the environment ministry in consultation with the states and it is presently with the tourism ministry for their comments.
