India’s first-ever mosque and the oldest in the sub-continent will be recreated in tune with its original character and aesthetics, as the Muziris Heritage Project (MHP) is set to restore the Cheraman Juma Masjid built in 629 AD at Kodungallur of this district. 25% increase in foreign tourists in Chandigarh since UNESCO heritage tag
Chandigarh has recorded a 25 per cent increase in foreign tourists since it got UNESCO world heritage status for its Capitol Complex buildings in 2016, according to the statistics. While 31,549 foreigners visited Chandigarh in 2016, the figure increased to 39,681 in 2018. Similarly, the domestic visitors, which were 11.8 lakh in 2016, increased to 15.4 lakh two years later, said a report by Hindustan Times. Houseboats at Odisha’s Chilika, Bhitarkanika soon
Tourists visiting Odisha’s Chilika and Bhitarkanika lakes will soon be able to stay in houseboats. Also, visitors to Puri may also get a chance to surf the waves at a planned annual event. In a bid to boost tourism in the state, the Tourism Advisory Committee of the state government has recently approved an array of activities. “The houseboats would be run by private operators on an operation-and-management basis while the annual festival at Puri will be organised in association with the Surfing Federation of India,” Tourism Secretary Vishal Dev told news agency PTI. Odisha to organise international coastal festival near Konark from December 14
Government of Odisha has decided to organise an international-level coastal festival, ‘Marine Drive Eco Retreat’, near Konark from December 14, 2019 to January 14, 2020. The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The festival, to be held on the Marine Drive, will have cultural programmes, 3D mapping, food festivals and adventure and water sports. A luxurious tent cottage with 50 rooms will come up with water, electricity and parking facilities. Temples attract more tourists than beaches, hill stations
Compared to beaches and hill stations, more tourists are visiting temples in Tamil Nadu. Spiritual tourism is bringing lakhs of people to this southern state, with statistics indicating that districts with popular temples have emerged as top draws. The temple town of Kancheepuram ranked first followed closely by Chennai. According to statistics from directorate of tourism, both Chennai and Kancheepuram collectively account for 20 per cent of the total 38.59 crore domestic tourists who visited the state last year. Hyderabad foodies can now dine up in the sky
Cloud Dining Restaurant, the first restaurant in the city that will allow people to have a fly dining experience, has opened at Hitec City, opposite Shiparamam in Hyderabad. This foodie palace is divided into two parts, one is Cloud Dining and the other one is Cloud Dining Restaurant. New policy to boost heritage tourism in Mysuru
Heritage Tourism in Mysuru is gearing up for a major boost as the state government is planning to announce the new tourism policy in the next two months. Around 140 monuments have already been identified in Mysuru. “Task force led by Infosys Foundation Chairperson, Sudha Murty, has already held three meetings in this regard and consultation has been sought by stakeholders in 15 districts. The new policy is expected to be announced in January 2020,” said CT Ravi, Tourism Minister. Tourism council of Bhutan to increase fee for monuments
The Tourism Council of Bhutan has decided to raise the entrance fee for monuments across Bhutan starting January 2020. The council also called the relevant stakeholders and agencies concerned to take note of the revision of the fees and inform their clients. The highest visiting fee has been revised on Tiger’s nest in Paro district, from 7.14 US dollars to 14.25 US dollars for adults, while monuments including Trashichho-Dzong, Memorial Chorten and others were raised from 4.28 US dollars to 7.14 US dollars. However, student visitors were given discount of 50 per cent.
Araku forests will soon be open for tourists at night
The Andhra Pradesh Tourism department is planning to introduce night vihar, a unique tourism package that will allow tourits to trek throught the wilderness of Visakhapatnam. On a pilot basis, the Araku forests will be made accessible for tourists at night. Representatives of the forest department and the tourism department will escort the tourists for night forest tours to ensure safety. The night vihar wil be arranged on jeeps and the authorities have ensured that the safety of the tourists is prime important. Annual Visakha Utsav to be held from December 26 to 28
Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao has announced the tentative dates for conducting the annual Visakha Utsav. The festival will most likely to be held from December 26 to 28. Final dates will be announced in a few days. This year, the utsav will focus on harnessing local talent and involving local people, and a budget of around Rs 1 crore will be sanctioned for the same. Goa Raj Bhavan closed to tourists for security reasons
Two days after former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik took charge as the Governor of Goa, the Raj Bhavan, a palatial restored fort which had been recently opened for tourists, has been closed to visitors due to “security reasons”. The Goa Tourism department which was coordinating tours to the Raj Bhavan on Tuesday posted a notice on its website saying the Raj Bhavan would be “closed to visitors for six months due to security reasons”. Cruise season begins as first luxury vessel arrives in Kochi
The arrival of first cruise liner AIDAvita marked the beginning of the cruise season in Kerala on November 5. The ship with 1,181 tourists and 406 crew members on board was docked at BTP berth, Kochi Port, around 8 am. The luxury liner began its journey from Dubai to Singapore on October 30. Before reaching Kochi, it was docked at Muscat, Goa and Mangaluru. It left for Male in the evening before sailing to Colombo, Langkawi and Kuala Lumpur to reach Singapore on November 16.
