Thailand govt to help debt-ridden Thai Airways remain afloat
A government panel is stepping up to help debt-ridden Thai Airways pass regulatory and contractual hurdles ahead of the national carrier’s planned debt rehabilitation. According to Prapas Kong, director-general of the State Enterprise Policy Office (SEPO), a state-appointed committee following up on the airline’s rehabilitation, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam, will arrange the help. The troubled airline turned to the government because it has many contracts with trading partners and legal obligations that can only be resolved with the state’s help. To save Ireland’s tourism industry, govt urged to allow travel distance of 20 km
The Irish government is being urged to consider a move to one-metre social distancing and to allow people travel beyond 20 km of their homes from June 29 to save Ireland’s tourism industry. A delayed reopening of schools, allowing bars and pubs to welcome customers from July 20 and removing the two-week self-isolation period for visitors from “safe” destinations are also being suggested. Hotel reservations, airline bookings at 50% of pre-COVID levels in China
Hotel bookings in China have returned to about 50% of pre-Covid levels, while airlines resumed operations at more than half of their capacity. China has decided to extend the exemption of value-added taxes for the tourism industry until the end of the year, thereby aiding the speedy recovery of the sector, as part of its efforts to shore up consumption. The epidemic plunged hotel occupancy rates to single digits in February, but the numbers have since bounced back to around 50%, based on information from operators and industry experts. Rajasthan’s state tourism minister Vishvendra Singh has initiated a safa (turban) challenge on Twitter, generating interest from politicians across India. State’s deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot and other leaders have responded to the challenge. Chhattisgarh urges Centre to grant approval for developing Ram Van Gaman Path, under Swadesh Darshan Scheme
Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel has urged the Union minister of state for tourism, Prahlad Patel, to grant approval to the state’s plan to develop a circuit alongside the places Lord Ram visited during his exile, under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. Bhupesh Baghel wrote to Patel stating that Chhattisgarh’s tourism department has selected nine such sites and prepared a concept plan at a cost of Rs 137.45 crore for developing the circuit. Andhra Pradesh to restart tourism from June 8, to promote temple tourism
Andhra Pradesh will restart its tourism operations from June 8. Hotels and restaurants will also reopen on the same date. AirAsia to waive flight change fees for new bookings
AirAsia has announced that it would waive flight change fees for any new bookings made between June 3 and Oct 31, 2020. In a statement, it said the option is applicable for online bookings on airasia.com for domestic flights within Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and India. “Guests may make an unlimited number of flight date changes via the ‘My Bookings’ tab on airasia.com or the AirAsia mobile app, and may rebook their flights for travel up to Dec 31, 2020, subject to seat availability and fare difference,” it said. Thailand’s beaches win back some normalcy
People returned to some of Thailand’s famed sandy beaches this week, maintaining adequate social distancing. The authorities have eased coronavirus restrictions for the first time in more than two months, and tourists were only too happy to take advantage. Local authorities ordered beachgoers to stay at least a metre apart. Not all beaches were closed during the lockdown, and not all re-opened this week. So, it’s like a slow roll out. Ireland’s world-renowned pub culture has been hit hard by the coronavirus lockdown and pub owners are certain that if the restrictions are not eased, they would be in utter ruins. Etihad to link 20 cities, after UAE permits transit flights
Etihad Airways has announced plans to link 20 cities in Europe, Asia and Australia via Abu Dhabi, following the decision of the National Emergency Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA) to reopen UAE airports for transit flights. Etihad recently launched links from Melbourne and Sydney to London Heathrow, allowing direct transfer connections to and from the UK capital via Abu Dhabi. But all of them are running empty, and fearing closure. Puducherry allows tourist spots to open
All tourist locations in the union territory of Puducherry have been permitted to open with immediate effect. District collector T Arun has said that Beach Road, Botanical Garden, Paradise Beach and Chunambar boat club can open as per the new guidelines. Shops are now permitted upto 8 pm, while take away from restaurants can be done up to 9 pm. Retail liquor shops have been permitted up to 7 pm, while bars are not allowed to open. The Health Ministry has come up with a new set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ease the nation into what is being called ‘Unlock 1.0’. The SOPs for restaurants, workplaces, shopping malls, religious places and hotels have been rolled out to restrict any further transmission of the coronavirus.
