Unauthorized houseboats should be seized – High Court
The court pointed out that with the enactment of the Kerala Maritime Board Act, the inspections and procedures announced by the Kerala Maritime Board, which is in charge of vessels in small ports including Alappuzha, from May 2, 2019, are sufficient to resolve the issue raised by the petitioners.
The Board will be tasked with conducting inspections in various groups, identifying unregistered and assessing eligibility for registration, providing an online GPS tracking system within three months, and providing approved color and barcode number plates to approved boats.
Illegal boats will be seized in collaboration with the district administration and the police chief. Follow-up is in progress after finding a place in the yard to stop the catching boats. Adequate facilities will be provided for solid waste treatment in collaboration with the Departments of Revenue, Tourism, and the Pollution Control Board.
The board had earlier conducted a lightning inspection and found that 66 boats did not have the required documents. The action was taken against 54 unregistered boats. Earlier in the day, the authorities had said that 713 houseboats were allowed in Alappuzha.
