Wider Test Acceptance Welcomed by WTTC : hails it as a major step for revival of international travel
WTTC welcomes this major step by the UK government which opens the doors to travellers arriving into England with proof of a negative COVID-19 test, no matter what the type of test they take.
“Giving equal validity to every COVID-19 test takes away the concern travellers may have that their test may not be accepted and thus face the prospect of being forced into an unnecessary quarantine,” said Gloria Guevara, WTTC President & CEO
“It also means tests of every type will be more affordable and accessible for travellers seeking to enter the UK safely, with proof of a negative test, and further reduce the risk of exporting the virus.
“This action complements similar action taken in the US – and many other countries around the world – which have introduced an ‘open door’ policy to get safe travel moving with acceptable pre-boarding COVID-19 negative tests, such as PCR and rapid antigen tests.” Said Guevara.
“Continuing with these damaging quarantines and added unnecessary restrictions will impact forward bookings which will be vital to revive international air travel, bring back Travel & Tourism sector jobs and resuscitate the global economy, while also protecting public health.
“WTTC has long called for an internationally recognised rapid and cost-effective testing regime upon departure at airports worldwide. This would avoid exporting the virus, especially by departing outbound passengers and aid the restoration of international travel.
“According to the WTTC’s 2020 Economic Impact Report, the importance of inbound international visitors is laid bare; international visitor spend in 2019 contributed £28.2 billion, representing 4.2% of the UK’s total exports” She added.
