General JB Park in Maharashtra to have monorail corridor
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) plans to build a Monorail corridor inside General Jagannathrao Bhosale (JB) Park at Sawantwadi in Sindhudurg district to lure tourists over a distance of around 400 metre.
The park, named after Jagannathrao Bhosale, a veteran freedom fighter, has a playing area for children, a cultural gathering area, an amusement park, a restaurant, and a pool.
The state tourism corporation has initiated invitation of bid from private companies to construct the proposed 400 meter-long Monorail corridor in a period of six months. It was confirmed by Abhimanyu Kale, Managing Director of MTDC to the media.
According to the official sources, the park receives thousands of visitors on a monthly basis from all over the state and also from other states. The officials count the monorail corridor inside the park will work as an additional tourist attraction.
“We plan an elevated Monorail corridor that will have two coaches with the carrying capacity of six passengers in one coach. It will have automatic doors and the coaches will be air-conditioned,” said an official from MTDC to the media.
“The Monorail route will be circular above the walking area of the park and will give tourists a bird’s eye view while travelling in the coaches. We have called for bids and will wait for the companies to show interest by suggesting a construction model. The cost of the project and travel fare will only be known after quotations are received from private parties,” he added.
Once materialized, this would be the world’s second shortest Monorail corridor. Presently the shortest Monorail corridor is of 300 meter at Tokyo zoo in Japan. It is followed by a 500 meter-long Monorail corridor at an amusement park in Finland.
