3rd edition of Guwahati International Music Festival to be held on Feb 8

The 3rd edition of the Guwahati International Music Festival will be held at Pragjyoti ITA Center for Arts, Machkhowa on February 8.

Conceptualized in 2010 by North-east based writer and cultural activist Aiyushman Dutta, to fill the need for a premier music festival in the country, Guwahati International Music Festival had been, showcasing the best of regional, national and international talents in the music field to the people of the region.

Besides serving as a platform for interaction among musicians, music professionals, music lovers, music trade firms and music institutes, the festival was also organized to initiate cross-cultural dialogue among people and artistes of the region with those from others parts of the country and the world.

The 3rd edition of the event will showcase various international performances along with classical guitar workshops to lecture-cum-demonstrations on indigenous folk music.

The event is organized by Eastern Beats Music Society in collaboration with North Eastern Council, Government of India and Assam Tourism. This year the festival will witness performances by around 150 artists from 5 countries.

Artists to perform the 3rd edition include renowned classical guitarist and composer Matt Bacon from US, Thailand’s guitar wizard Padet Netpakdee, radical Sufi and jazz musician Manmohan Thapaliyal from Nepal, Naga folk fusion band Abiogenesis etc.

There will be a lecture demonstration on Howey Music and the ‘Bamhum’ – a new wind musical instrument developed by Guru Moa Subong and Guru Arenla Subong.

Among other attractions, there will be a unique orchestra of 100 sitars led by Guru Hem Hazarik, who will unveil his newly invented instrument – the Hem Veena on the occasion.

Besides the musical feast, the award winning documentary of Assamese film maker Bidyut Kotoky, ‘Guns and Guitars’ will be screened on the venue.
