Assam hoists the highest national flag in the country on Gandhi Jayanti

Tourists will have another reason to visit the The ‘Gandhi Mandap’ atop the Sarania Hill in Guwahati. The authorities have hoisted a gigantic National Flag on a monumental flagpole, which is claimed to be the tallest in the country.

It was earlier planned to install the flagpole any of the national days, including independence day; however it the flag could unfurl on 150 birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on 2nd October.

The flag was hoisted by Sarbananda Sonowal, the Chief Minister of Assam, with the presence of state Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary and other dignitaries.

The flagpole is 319.5 feet high and the National Flag measures 120 feet x 80 feet. The pole is made of high-strength steel and weighs around 46,000 Kg. The project cost is approximately Rs 2.91 core.

Manufacturing of the flag pole was assigned to Guwahati Smart City Limited and the erection works were carried out by Bajaj Electricals Ltd (BEL).

“Proud to dedicate India’s tallest National Flag (from average city height) to the people at Gandhi Mandap, Guwahati on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti,” tweeted Sonowal after unfurling the flag on Tuesday morning.
