Time to rebuild Munnar: Mega cleaning kickstarts
Just a month back, Munnar was bustling with high-end preparations for the upcoming Neelakurinji season. Around 3500 people were expected to visit Munnar to see the kurinji flowers. But, now the once beautiful hillstation is in shatters after the devastating flood and land slides in the region.
The hotel and restaurants association, tourism professionals and residents had begun the mass cleaning drive on Sunday. The district administration has begun the work to repair the roads and restore power and communication facilities. With an aim to restore the lost glory of the majestic hill station, the authorities have started a three day mass cleaning drive. More than 1000 volunteers have gathered together to support the cleaning activities.
“The mega cleaning of Munnar has kickstarted today. More than 1000 volunteers have come forward for the mission. We are arranging accommodation for outstation volunteers. The mass cleaning is well supported by associations in Munnar and hotel and travel agency volunteers from different destinations,” said Shine K S, Deputy Director, Tourism.
Munnar had been cut off from the rest of the state as the roads and communication facilities have been completely damaged. Devikulam has witnessed some 12 major landslides during this monsoon. As many as 131 houses were fully damaged and 763 suffered partial damages this monsoon.
