Peechi dam attracts thousands of visitors

Amidst the adversities of the disastrous rain that affected the lives of people in Kerala, there is some good news coming from the tourism sector. Following the rain, most of the dams in Kerala are open now. The spectacular view of water flowing down from the dams is attracting more visitors to the dam sites.

Peechi Dam, situated 22 km outside Thrissur in Kerala, is attracting thousands of visitors, ever since it has opened the shutters on 27th July 2018. Four shutters of the dam were opened by one inch each. The authorities opened the shutters as catchment areas of the reservoir received heavy rains. It was after four years, the shutters of Peechi dam has opened.

On the day of the shutter opening itself, around 10,000 people have visited Peechi to witness the splendid show. It was the biggest gathering the dam has ever witnessed on a single day. The first Sunday, after the shutter has opened, the dam could have a gross collection of around Rs 3.75 lakhs, as entrance fees. This is the highest single day collection in the history of the dam. The authorities are expecting double this collection during the coming holidays like Independent day and Onam.

Currently, strength of the rain has subsided in the dam area. However, water flow to the dam is still strong. The dam shutters may be kept open, if rain continued to be the same in coming days. Closing of the shutters will be considered according to the water flow to the reservoir.

The authorities have taken utmost care with regard to safety in the dam sites. All precautions have been taken when allowing people to visit the dam sites. Visitors should adhere to the safety guidelines of the dam authorities, while going near the dam.
