Friends of Assam campaigns for conservation of Rhinos
Friends of Assam and Seven Sisters (FASS) is organizing a panel discussion on “Saving the Rhinos – A Campaign for Conservation of Wild-life Population from Extinction” at Nehru Centre, cultural Wing of The High Commission on Friday, 10, August 2018.
Destruction of wild life and environment has become pervasive in most of the countries and remedial actions to be taken for their conservation. In Assam, large-scale poaching and killings are going on along in Kaziranga with the destruction of the animals’ habitats resulting in man- animal conflicts. The purpose of this event is to assist Govt. of Assam to find appropriate measures against poachers.
The event will witness the coming together of a number of top UK & India journalists. This initiative has been taken by Rini Kakati, Assam Coordinator for UK.
Death of the last Northern white male rhino on 19th March 2018 was a shocking news for animal lovers and it became critical to take necessary measures to save the giants from extinction.
Environmentalists recently announced that the Black Rhino in Western Africa has become extinct and the White Rhino in Central Africa is currently tottering on the brink of extinction. Saving the Rhinos in Assam thus become a crucial issue and should not be undermined.
The panelists will be led by Syed Zarir Hussain,Chief Managing Editor, News Live; Cathy Dean, CEO Save the Rhino International; Philip Mansbridge, IFAW UK Director; Vijay Mehta, Co-Founder and Chair of Uniting for Peace; Kongkona Sarma Co-founder of Gypsyfeet Travels and trained economist and Pralab Barua, Director, Paymek Consultant Pvt Ltd.
The meeting will be chaired by Rita Payne, President Emeritus, Common wealth Journalists Association. The event will be graced by HE Y K Sinha, High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, Lord Sheikh, and Rt Hon Virendra Sharma MP
“Assam and seven Sister States” refers to the easternmost region of India consisting of the contiguous states Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.
