Kerala’s Kappad beach shortlisted for Blue Flag certification

One the historically important destinations in Kerala, the Kappad beach, has been shortlisted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) for the prestigious Blue Flag certification.

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has launched pilot project ‘Blue Flag’ to develop and enhance standards of cleanliness on beaches. The ‘Blue Flag’ is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach, Marina or sustainable boating tourism operator, meets its stringent standards. Its purpose is to enhance standards of cleanliness, upkeep and basic amenities at beaches.

Kappad is the only beach that was selected from the God’s own Country to be considered for the tag. A beach management committee has been formed to have a look at the immediate requirements for winning the title and completing them on time. Representatives of various government departments, including Fisheries and Revenue, have already visited the site to plan the project implementation.

The beach needs an exclusive waste management facility, flawless security arrangements, first aid services and comfort station facilities to get the certification.
