5.9 magnitude earthquake hits Indonesia

An earthquake measuring over 5.9 magnitude on Richter scale hits the Moluccas Sea, offshore Indonesia earlier today. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was noticed under 36.5 km northwest of Kota Ternate at around 4.30 am on Monday. No damage to life and property was recorded by the authorities.

Meanwhile, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre hasn’t issued any tsunami alert, with respect to the quake. Previously Indonesia, has the history of a huge undersea earthquake in 2004, causing a massive destruction of life and property. Around 1,70,000 people were killed followed by the Tsunami that hit the region.

Indonesia geographically sits on the “Ring of Fire” where continental plates collide with each other, that causes frequent tremor and volcanic eruptions.
