Iraq got its first cat hotel

A world away from Iraq’s battlegrounds, Basra’s cat-lovers have found a haven for their favourite pets. The country’s first feline hotel has opened for its guests.

The hotel was the brainchild of Ahmad Taher, a 24-year-old veterinary student and feline fan. The hotel located above a vet’s clinic, provides a comfortable place for cats to play when the owners are away.

For as little as 5,000 Iraqi dinars (₹275) a night – or half that for long stays – the guests can enjoy beds, regular meals, health checkups and a mini playground, all under the cooling purr of an air conditioner.

Taher said he plans to expand the hotel to host dogs and even birds.
