Volkswagen ties up with Skoda for 6 new models in India

German automobile giant Volkswagen and Czech, Republic car makers Skoda are planning to invest Rs 7, 800 crore in India for launching brand new 6 cars.

As India is keeping strict regulations on emission and safety the new cars would be given priority based on it. The launch is expected to be in 2020 with 3 cars each for the brands.

The new cars would be under Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, a modular construction of its transverse, front-engine, front-wheel drive automobiles. “If the models are successful in India then we will expand the market to other countries,” informs the spokesperson of the company.

Around one billion euros (Rs 7, 800 crores) thus invested would be utilized to set up engineering and research centre as well as new production houses.

“We want to build our product portfolio. In short term, we are focusing to launch our latest SUV Karoq in India in the next 12-18 months as SUV models are getting much more attention in the Indian market,” says Ashutosh Dixit, Director Sales, Service and Marketing, Skoda Auto India.

“In the medium, to long-term perspective, our CEO has already stated that India is one of the top priority markets for Skoda and we do have some robust plans for the country,” Dixit said.

Skoda is currently focusing on all 3 segments such as sedan, hatchback and SUV in order to captivate the Indian market.
